Competence based assessment is about showing the ability to perform in a real working environment. It is not about sitting an exam.
NVQ's are qualifications suitable to anyone who can demonstrate their competence. It is based upon the idea of candidates collecting sufficient evidenceagainst a set of detailed standards often referred to as the national standards, the evidence presented is then assessed by a qualified assessor (D32/33 qualification or the new A1 qualification).
The expertise required of Assessors is of 2 main types:
- Subject expertise in the units of competence the assessor will be assessing, and
- Expertise in the methodology of assessing NVQs.
Generally the candidate is already in a place of work and independent of the learning location. There are no age limits or restrictions, so anyone can apply.
The process of assessment takes place in 4 stages:
ASSESSING PERFORMANCE BY OBSERVATION
ASSESSING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
DECIDE AND FEEDBACK
It is important that the assessor and the candidate work together, especially in the planning stage of the assessment.
